Abstract
Learning to read is one of the most important skills that primary Iearne
needed to acquire to be able to be successful in his academic performance. Reading 1s
a skill utilized in every academic area because information is presented in text.
Through reading learners develop and expand their language skills. The more the
learners read, the more chances of exposure to the language, widen his vocabulary
and thus making them more articulate in communication and even in writing.
Teaching children how to read in the early stage is critical in promoting
learning to read, according to Mwoma (2017). More advance skills are needed as children
move on to another grade level, thus learners who failed to develop their reading skills at the
early stage tends to have difficulty in developing essentials skills that are necessary to have
better academic results. Successful reading and writing involve comprehension, fluency,
masterly of essential strategies and motivation (Strategic Marketing and Research, 2013).

Developing strong reading skills is the primary goal of every reading program. Since
the development of the reading capacity of the learners depends on the early stage of learning
and Grade One teachers play vital role in this developmental stage. They use every means of
