Abstract
The Department of Education has prescribed various modalities of online classes amidst COVID-19 pandemic. This can be in the form of printed, digitized modules, or blended learning. A significant number of low-performing students were identified from the adviser- researcher's advisory during the First and Second Grading Reports. These low-performing students obtained failing grades due to absences and non-submission of outputs as part of the assessment process. So, MaGKaaGapay: Magulang at Guro, Katuwang at Gabay sa Pag-aaral, an intervention program to reduce the number of failing students, was introduced. The study focuses on (1) identifying the problems that low-performing students encounter in terms of attendance, completion, and submission of performance tasks and written outputs; and (2) measuring the effectiveness of parent's support to their children's online class. Data was collected using three methods: (1) one-on-one interviews with students and their parents, (2) survey and questionnaire, and (3) focus-group discussion or FGD. The frequency and percentage distribution were used to interpret and analyze the results. The results were as follows: (1) low-performing students had problems: physical, academic, and internal. Because of these problems, the class adviser sought the help of parents and subject teachers by keeping a record of their students' daily online attendance and outputs weekly. Based on the results, parents' and teachers' close monitoring of low-performing students helped them improve in terms of attendance and compliance with the required outputs, resulting in them getting better grades and advancing to grade 10. This implies that parental authority over their children is essential, and that it should always be exercised. Similarly, students' obedience to teachers, particularly in accomplishing the performance tasks was evident. It is recommended to further investigate those problems encountered and suggest solutions. Additionally, find more ways to help parents strengthen their motivating capacity and parent- teacher role at home.
