Abstract
Reading comprehension is an indispensable skill that can greatly affect a learner's academic performance not only in English but also in the content areas. As a cognitive process, reading requires the students to use their vocabulary knowledge , background knowledge, knowledge of grammar, metacognitive awareness, and syntactic knowledge in order to make meaning . Any deficiency on the part of the learner will greatly affect the reading process and may even result to a failure in comprehension. Unfortunately , the result of the McCall - Crabbs standardized reading test for school year 2018-2019 revealed that some Grade 8 students obtained a reading comprehension level of grade 6. This inadequacy has hindered them from taking second language input and comprehending academic texts. Research literature showed that explicit teaching of metacognitive reading strategies can help improve learners' reading comprehension level and make them independent and skilled readers. It is in this light that the researcher conducted this study to determine the effect of metacognitive reading strategies to the students' reading comprehension level. the Survey of Reading Strategies by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002) was used to determine which strategies need to taught explicitly during the 20-day intervention. A significant increase in the reading comprehension level of the learners was noted after the training
