Abstract
The main objective of this study is to improve the problem-solving skills of grade 8 students in mathematics using language-based strategies. It employed a quasi-experimental research method and was conducted to grade 8 students under modular distance learning modality. A total of thirty students chosen randomly from sections Diamond and Onyx were considered as participants of the study. Two groups were determined the study. The control group was taught problem-solving using the traditional method, while the experimental group was taught using the Language-based strategies. The level of students’ learning is obtained after administering a pre-test, to both groups, and a post-test between the two groups after the intervention. Based on the results and findings of this study, it was concluded that students have insufficient mastery in problem-solving skills in Mathematics using the traditional teaching while the use of language-based strategy has a big-impact on students’ perception on understanding the problems. Also, it has been observed that the intervention helped them enhance computation level that increased the mastery of the lesson. Therefore, it can be proven that the intervention using language-based strategies gave an increase in the problem-solving skills of the participants. To help all teachers to improve the students mastering the lesson and as a guide to learn other approaches in teaching the subject matter, it is highly recommended that using language-based strategies can be one of the interventions teacher can use to improve student’s problem-solving skills.
