Abstract
Explain and Systematic Phonics Instruction lead lo an understanding of the alphabetic principle. I helps children learn the relationship between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language, Provide ample opportunities for children to apply what they are learning about letters and sounds to the reading of words and sentences. This explicit and systematic phonics instruction is beneficial for pupils who are having difficulty in learning to read and who are at risk for developing future reading problems.
This action research was conducted to improve the reading skills of 30 selected grade 2 pupils of Manuel Luis Quezon Elementary School. The researcher used explicit and systematic phonics instruction. It starts from simple to complex.

The study utilized experimental method. Pre- test and post- test were administered. The gathering methods used were teaching- made reading oral test and teacher- made instructional materials using explicit and systematic instruction. Improvement was measured through checklist questionnaire.
As a result of the intervention, pupils demonstrated improvement in their reading skills. Pupils were provided with varied activities in sequence. They were well guided to master simple facts that will be used in next competency in reading. In the planned activities of the intervention, there was maximum pupils' participation in the teaching- learning process in reading. The researcher therefore recommended the utilization of explicit and systematic phonics instruction to other grade level especially
