Abstract
Being numerate etails nore than just knowing how to do basic math. It is the ability to connect
What students learn in sclhool with real-life situations that require problem solving, critical
thinking.
and sense-making skills in applied contexts. The importance of numeracy has been
widely recognized and the conduct of an intervention will be helpful in attaining its importance.
Wiüh this premises, this study looked into the significant improvement in students' numeracy
skills as a result of the intervention- the Special Math Class (SMaC). A total of four hundred
twenty-eight (428) selected Grade 7 junior high school students were asked to answer the
teacher-made Numeracy Test during their enrolment. After the students were exposed to the
classroom Mathematics classes, they were given a posttest using the validated teacher-made
Numeracy Test. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results revealed the need
to conduct an intervention, which is the Special Math Class (SMaC), a flagship program of the
Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School to improve the numeracy skills of Grade 7 students at the
end of the school year. Based on the findings, there is a statistically significant diference
between the pretest and postest means in numeracy test of students who attended the SMaC,
thereby revealing that it can be considered as an effective intervention program in improving
the students' numeracy skills. Likewise, the SMaC had a significant impact on the students'
posttest scores performance, leading the researchers to conclude that SMaC can have a major
contribution of ataining 100% mumeracy skills among Grade 7 students. While this study
brought about the importance of intervention or remediation to eradicate non-mumerates,
exploring alternative ways of delivering the SMaC was highly recommended in future studies.
