IMPROVING GRADE 7 STUDENTS' MASTERY OF THE FUNDAMENTAL OPERATIONS OF INTEGERS USING VIRTUAL DAMATH

Abstract
The performance level in Mathematics of Filipino students is on the brink of becoming the lowest compared to other countries . One of the least mastered competencies in Grade 7 Mathematics is performing fundamental operations using integers . For this school year , the pandemic brought challenges in the development of this competency because of the limited synchronous time which is one hour per week in Mathematics that led to low mastery of the said competency based on the first quarter grades of the Grade 7 students . To address this problem , the research conducted a quasi - experimental research using one group pretest - posttest design . As part of innovation , the researcher utilized a game - based activity which is the Virtual Damath . This game was developed using the Google Jamboard which has a collaborative feature so that the two players can access the board at the same time . The proponent believed that the use of interactive games like the Virtual Damath could help in the development of the said numerical skill and could also be a hobby of the students especially this times of quarantine . The game was introduced to twenty Grade 7 students with Basic mastery level in performing fundamental operations using integers based from their pre - test . They were engaged in playing the Virtual Damath for almost eight weeks and were given a post - test afterwards . Results showed that there was a significant difference in the results of their pre - test and post - test after engaging them in playing Virtual Damath . A questionnaire was also given to them which asked them about the reasons why they find performing fundamental operations using integers difficult , their perceptions about the Virtual Damath and problems encountered in playing Virtual Damath. Based from the result, the learners not only improved their methematical ability, but found a new hobby during the quarantine. It is recommended therefore to utilize Virtual Damath through the Damath Society of North Fairview High School to improve mathematical competencies of the students using this game-based activity.
