Abstract
Fine motor skills affect all areas of development and is a prerequisite skill that predicts the future success of all other developmental domains. The purpose of this qualitative study is to improve the fine-motor skills of a 9-year old child with mild paralysis through the use of manipulative materials. Data collection techniques used were checklist, questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Data were analyzed by comparing the pre-test and post-test using the validated instruments: Localized parent questionnaire, Daily Observation Notes (DON), Teacher's Observation of Learning Tool (TOLT), and Handbook on Monitoring Fine-Motor Progress: A Checklist. Previous narratives from Psychological Evaluation and Individualized Education Plan were also reviewed. Pre-test using Handbook on Monitoring Fine Motor Progress, tabulated 25 struggling performances on handling manipulatives, and 20 progressing. Post-test indicated 2 struggling performances, 15 progressing, and 23 consistently demonstrated performances. Other observations were comprehensively summed up through the TOLT. Results showed that the 5-moth long one-on-one program using manipulative materials has been effective. It has significantly improved the fine-motor skills of a child with a mild paralysis. This study made an impact on the life of our participant and changed our perspective towards teaching and learning process. We recommend that the suggested manipulatives be used in play-based instruction under one-on-one supervision in aiding children with mild paralysis attained the necessary pre-writing skills.
